All Things Winter Containers

Hello!

Welcome back to another Floral Bar Sunday. The weather doesn’t feel like the middle of October with the seventy degrees and sunshine,  but I’ll take it for as long as I can get. Hopefully you’ve had some time to get your perennial garden going and have planted your bulbs, but if not - there’s still time! You’re also just in time for this post, because today we’re talking about winter containers and the best pots for your plants to keep them protected and healthy to bloom beautifully in the spring.

Let’s start with what NOT to plant in during the cold months: terra cotta and ceramic pots. Both of these materials absorb moisture quickly and as it freezes it expands -  which leads to cracks in the pot, therefore disrupting the natural process and protection of your outdoor plants. Plastic or fiberglass containers are a better option than these; however have their own nuances which are not optimal for winter planting.

Metal, concrete, and wood containers hold up the best in the cold and snow, though proper care and attention should be given to these plants to ensure that the pot remains intact all winter.

Many gardeners will elevate their pots on bricks or boards, or simply move them to a cool, covered area so the chance for snow or water to contact the plants is minimal. For the heavier pots and planters than cannot be moved, gardeners will fill the container all the way to top with soil, and even add a layer of straw over the top with a burlap bag. This prevents excessive water collection which can damage the pot or planter, as well as water-log the plants. Soil also insulates the roots to help them survive the winter months. Also be sure to select plants, bulbs, and perennials that are suited for your zone!! What grows in California probably won’t grow in Michigan - keep this in mind!

This is still a hot time of year for plants, even high it’s not “hot” outside! Setting yourself up for success in your garden for next spring will be a relief you didn’t know you needed to feel.

In the mean time my friends, I hope the remainder of October is chilly, spooky, and filled with lots of time with your loved ones. Have a Tootsie Roll and a Snickers Bar for me - trick or treat?! 👻

Xoxo,
